I'll offer some perspectives on the functional requirements for a practical Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) solution, coming out of conversations in the FOLIO and ReShare projects as well as the NISO initiative to propose best practices for interoperable CDL systems. During the Pandemic, many libraries and organizations implemented a variety of emergency solutions to enable digital access to collections while physical facilities were out of bounds for library users. These solutions were often completely separated from normal resource access mechanisms and the library automation systems. The job now is to figure out the path towards a more sustainable, integrated approach to digital lending of library-owned materials. I hope to inspire interest and engagement in tackling these challenges in our communities, so we can help set direction rather than leaving the future wholly in the hands of commercial entities.
